Pianist

Finnish pianist Mark Sulander is a 19-year-old Helsinki-based musician whose artistic voice is characterized by emotional depth, refined sensitivity, and a wide expressive range. He is currently studying piano at the Sibelius Academy Youth Program, where he has studied under the guidance of Antti Hotti since 2024. Prior to this, he studied at the Helsinki Conservatory with Heikki Pellinen from 2020 to 2024, following earlier private piano studies.

Sulander’s musical personality has been described as “personal, emotionally wide-ranging, and rich in nuance,” reflecting a distinctive interpretative approach and a strong sense of artistic individuality. He has participated in numerous international festivals and masterclasses, including the International Piano Festival of Málaga, L’Académie Internationale d’Été de Nice, and the Vienna Piano Masterclass, and has received lessons and masterclass instruction from distinguished pianists and pedagogues such as Hortense Cartier-Bresson, Fabio Bidini, Tuija Hakkila, Risto-Matti Marin, Alberto Urroz, Konstantin Bogino, among others.

Alongside his solo career, Sulander is an active chamber musician and Lied pianist. He performs regularly in diverse chamber ensembles and has participated in numerous chamber music masterclasses. His appearances include performances at the Tampere Chamber Music Festival and other festivals. Sulander is particularly dedicated to Lied music and collaborates closely with singers at the Helsinki Conservatory under the mentorship of Heikki Pellinen. He has received notable recognition for his Lied pianism, with esteemed teachers praising his exceptionally sensitive ear and deep understanding of vocal collaboration.

In 2025, Sulander was awarded Third Prize in the Steinway & Sons Nordic Junior Piano Competition (Young Artists Category). He has also received prizes at the Tapiola Piano Competition and shared Third Prize at the 2024 Helsinki Lied Competition. His artistic development has been further supported by a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation in 2025.
